It’s Spring, so why am I not happy?

Is This Depression?

It’s spring – everything is growing, the weather is warming up, so why am I not feeling any spring in my step?

Am I depressed?

You are not alone. Depression is a real disease. Just like a broken bone or an infection, sometimes we get sick or hurt and need help.

If you or a loved one are experiencing some of these symptoms, it may be some form of depression:

  • Lethargy, tired all the time
  • Body aching
  • Bad mood, irritable, angry
  • Sad, crying
  • Anxious, nervous
  • Not interested in anything
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Poor sleep, Insomnia
  • Or sleeping a lot
  • Weight gain or loss

Maybe it started with a dramatic life change.  A new baby in the family, a divorce, the death of a loved one, a traumatic accident. The causes for depression are many. There may be food sensitivities. Perhaps the brain isn’t producing the feel good hormones, like serotonin or dopamine.

New Hope for Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a debilitating, progressive disease that affects 1% of people over the age of 60.

In Parkinson’s disease certain cells within the brain stem, called the substantia nigra, make less of the neuro-transmitter dopamine. This causes the jerky, slowed movements, difficulty walking and speaking and the resting tremor of the hands. Perhaps the most famous younger patient is Michael J Fox who was only 29 when he was diagnosed.

Typically Parkinson’s is treated with medication and occupational or physical therapy. There is a brand new application of Laser therapy to reach the area of the disease and stimulate more normal function. Movements can be smoother, better coordinated. Tasks of daily living, like eating can be improved with steadier movements.

Health Coach Week is Officially Recognized

Good news!

On Friday, February 17th, Senate Resolution number 67, the National Health and Wellness Coach Recognition resolution, was passed by unanimous consent.

This means health coaching is recognized as an integral part of preventive health care and as a supportive path towards better self care which means greater health. Read the full text of the resolution here.

Health Coach Week was officially Feb 13-17, 2017,  but for us health coaching week is every week of the year!

Say Good Bye to Bad Mood Foods

I woke up feeling grumpy. The bright sunshine seemed to be too much, and even the noise of the refrigerator running annoyed me. The morning exercise helped a little bit, since exercise increases oxygen intake and boosts seratonins, but something didn’t feel right. To lift my spirits, I ate a gooey, tasty doughnut, and soon felt even worse.

Sometimes the very things we do to cheer ourselves end up having negative effects! I didn’t know it then, but I had responded to the blues with one of the bad mood foods, sure to bring my spirits even lower.

Game Addiction

“I would not inflict this game upon anyone.” These are the words of a die-hard gamer as he stares into the computer screen, War of Worldcraft blaring in the background. He gets lost from reality for over twelve hours at a time, neglecting food or bathroom breaks. He is a gamer who has given everything he has for his game and the game is giving nothing back. Game addiction is real, but it is often ignored. The gaming industry is a $66 billion dollar industry and over 12% of it’s consumers are addicted.

Treating ADD & ADHD Naturally

North Carolina rates 15th in the nation for diagnosing our children with ADD/ADHD, although North Carolina stands 4th in the nation for treating ADD/ADHD with medications. Side effects for these medications are staggering and have long term effects.

I grew up with four brothers and they were constantly getting into trouble. On one occasion, my brother left a green snake in his pants when he put them in the laundry. My mother was extremely upset when finding the snake, although all my brother could do was laugh. There were lots of time that my mother would want pull her hair out dealing with “her boys”. She never said they have ADD or they have ADHD, she always referred to them as “just being boys”. She would change up their diet and no sugar was allowed. In a few days, they would calm down and not be so uncontrollable.

A New You for the New Year

The beginning of a new year often means putting things into perspective and starting routines that we have since lacked the motivation to begin or have put on the back burner due to preparing for the holidays. We know we want to feel better, look better, and be healthy. Very rarely do we ever stick to our diet plans or our exercise routines. Then when the New Year rolls around again, we find that we have just gained weight. Why? The number one cause of weight gain is dieting.

With crash dieting, we become malnourished. Our bodies are starving for minerals and protein and with these diets, we deny the body the things it desperately needs. These mineral deficiencies can cause anxiety, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and even depression. Each of our brains react differently. For example, if you crave sweets you could be low in magnesium. When our bodies lack nutrients, it can manifest itself as hunger. We may be eating plateful of goodies, but until we get what our bodies need nothing will be able to fill that. January is Brain Month

When my husband began to suffer from sleep deprivation, we chalked it up to the growing pains of a new marriage. Neither of us were used to sleeping with the other and knew it would be an adjustment. Slowly we began to see other changes in his behavior. He was moody, short fused, emotional, and withdrawn. Neither of us understood what was going on. He seemed like a completely different person. When we finally began to get some answers, we discovered that the foods he was eating were attacking his brain. We are taught it in school. The brain is important, but do we realize just how important? Our brain is the source of our personality and intelligence. It involves itself in every decision we make. When our brain is working right, we are happier and make better decisions. When it isn’t working right, we are sad, sick, and everything suffers.

Take the Stress Out of Your Christmas

Christmas is a magical time of the year. It is the one time where every house on the street is lit up with beautiful lights and- if we are lucky- a white fluffy snow will cover the ground like a blanket. Presents are piled neatly underneath the Christmas tree and children are looking for Santa Clause. The picture I’ve painted is serene, but there is another side to Christmas. Sometimes we allow the pressure to make the holidays perfect overwhelm us. We have to find the perfect gift or cook the perfect dinner. The house needs to be perfect. This pressure can cause unnecessary stress and allow the joy to be sucked from the season.

A Quick and Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. Breakfast literally mean “to break the fast”. If you go to bed at ten o-clock and don’t eat anything until noon, you are going fourteen hours without food. Our bodies need energy in order to function. Food is how our bodies get that energy. By starting your day off with something to eat, you are setting your body up for healthy energy levels. Some studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are mentally sharp throughout the day.

Is it just old age?

I am constantly surprised when I talk to people and they dismiss many of their problems as “just because of old age”. recently as I was checking someones spine they said just that as I found a very tender spot. I immediately went a few inches higher and pressed on that area asking them to compare, the new area did not hurt so I asked, Is the spot that hurt any older than this one? Of course the answer was no. And that generally gets people thinking more clearly on the validity of that statement “it’s just my age”.

Dealing with Low Blood Sugar

One thing I have always suffered with is my eating habits. My breakfast is coffee. Throughout the day, I would continue my coffee binge until dinner time when I finally ate something substantial for the first time all day.

By lunch time, I was becoming disoriented and completely not myself. My quality of work began to decline. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. I was convinced that I was tired, that I had worked hard all day and it was almost quitting time. But the truth was that I was denying myself something my body and brain desperately needed- food.
